Iams is a decent food. He doesn't need to be on it until he's a year old...about 9 months you can switch him to adult food, kitten food is often to calorie dense for them and they become overweight. Here are a few foods I like:
Eagle Pack
Innova
Solid Gold
Sci. Diet
Eukanuba
Nutro
Royal Canin
The first three are more natural and can be found at specialty pet food stores, look on their websites to find a local dealer. Eagle pack is my fave, and all of my animals are on it except one dog, he didnt like the taste. The last 4 you can find at petsmart.

I prefer all natural foods with high quality ingredients. They may be costly initially but the end results are worth it! They eat less of a quality food because they can meet their nutritional needs with less food due to the high quality ingredients, there is less to clean in the litterbox, they have beautiful coats, great teeth, a good weight, etc.
I use Wellness for my cats and have since I adopted them. Both are in great shape for their ages (3 and soon to be 5). Other good brands include:
Innova, Chicken Soup, Eagle Pack Holistic, Felidae, Natures Balance, Merrick, Solid Gold. etc. The only other type of food I recommend that is not holistic is Nutro Natural.
My cats (both males) were switched to an adult forumla once they were neutered at 5 months.

Iams is good.
When kitty gets older, you can switch to Costco's Kirtland brand premium cat food. It's exactly the same quality as Iams, Science Diet, Nutrascience, or any other super-premium brand, but it costs 1/3 of the other brands.

Royal Canin, Hills, Iams, Purina...all good well balanced food and yes continue to feed a kitten or growth food until he is a year old and then move onto a maintainence or adult diet.
If you are using only dry food please make sure you always have fresh water available as male cats are prone to urinary problems

Kitten chow is probably the best but read the lables and the one with the highest protein is the best. If protein is listed in the first four ingredients then it's probably high enough.

Iams is actually a pretty bad brand, despite the price.
I feed my cats Nutro, and they are quite happy and healthy.

Do your pet shops stock Nutrience brand, we have friends who breed cats and they said that it was the best food they have ever used.

cats are carnivores. some really great pet stores carry frozen, raw meats (rabbit, salmon, etc.) for your cat. it's pricey, but it is the best.
a brand called "royal canin" (yes, canin - not canine) has a really great selection, and designates their food by age of cat.
