If you are talking about a litter of pups then start to introduce puppy food at 5 weeks old. Make sure there is enough for the whole gang and moisen the puppy chow with water. Let them nurse until about 6 or 7 weeks old then the mother dogs will not allow them after that.
Remember to keep the pups with mom until 8 weeks old or older.

In my dogs case, his mother had something wrong with her and stopped feeding her pups at 4 weeks, so went on to puppy food(mixed with milk supplement). I say if the puppy can chew then let it eat. When you got it I assume it was 8 weeks so feed it puppy food! And by the way they usually recommend they stay on puppy food for like a year, but my vet made us stop puppy food early cause my big guy was growing real fast!

Puppies are usually ready to be weened at about 8 weeks.

If the puppies start following Mom to food dish, earlier than 8 weeks and they show an interest in her food, you can start putting food out for them.

usually puppies drink milk until the age of about 6-8 weeks and should then gradually be offered puppy food. the transition should happen gradually and they should be allowed to be with their mothers at least until the age of 8 - i prefer 10 weeks!
if they have access to their mother and to soft puppy food, they will go for whatever they need at the right moment!

whenever they can start chewing it.... i would say about 5-6 weeks .what i did until my puppy was of 9 weeks of age was wet the puppy food with warm water and let it soak for about 2 minutes and then give it to the puppy this allowed his sensitive teeth to chew the food up well enough.

the mother will usually start to ween them in about 5 weeks start feeding them small amounts of soft food when this happens. gradually mix in hard dog food with the soft until they are able to tolerate hard food alone. feed them often for the first few days then 3 times a day. i hope this helps you i have raised 5 litters of beagle pups and 1 litter of toy chiuauaus useing this method. you may have to stick their faces in the food at first until they learn what it is. good luck
