A yellow onion will work fine. I prefer to cook with yellow or white onions and save the red for salads and burgers. The red onion just adds a little more color to the chicken recipe.
Let me know how it turns out. The recipe sound yummy.

Yellow onions have a stronger onion flavor than red ones, which tend to have a more mild slightly sweeter taste. That could make a difference in the overall flavor of the recipe.

Sure it would. The only difference is that the red onion might be a little sweeter than the yellow, but with scampi I don't think it really matters! I do it all the time , believe me it'll taste just as good . Hope i've helped!

Yellow onions are a little sweeter, white onions are a little stonger, red onions are a bit more mild... But they are all onions. If the recipe is good, the onion isn't a big enough deal to seriously change anything.

The switch of onions would change the flavor of the dish. It's up to you if you'd still enjoy it. Red onions have a lot of sugar in them, are less 'oniony,' and also smell different.
If you make the substitution, you'll probably want to cut the quantity of the onion down to balance out the difference of flavors.

Sure the onion is fine.
I read of taste testing where the diner could not tell the difference between cooked onions like yellow red or white. I think Cook's Illustrated did the test but can't remember.

it will be fine but the yellow onion does have a stronger flavor. you may want to cut back. unless you like onions; then use the whole thing.
