Yes and no. The older Hyundais (pre 2000) were notorious for their poor reliability, build quality, and lack of safety. However, they've improved a lot since then. Recently, the Hyundai Santa Fe and Hyundai Azera replace second in their respective classes (compat SUV and upscale sedan) in Consumer Report's annual car issue, and have also scored high in other magazines (Hyundai's Azera tied for second in Motor Trend's 2006 Car of the Year test).
So if you're looking for a newer Hyundai (I'd say at least a 2002 model), then go for it. But if you're looking at an old Hyundai such as an Excel or an old Accent, then avoid it unless absolutely necessary. Same goes for Kia, which Hyundai manufactures - Avoid the old, go for the new.
As to the Hyundais being cheaper, it's because the labor cost in South Korea is much lower than that of the United States (which has some of the highest paid automobile manufacturers in the world with some of the best benefits). Therefore, it's much cheaper to build the cars in South Korea, then import them to the United States. This is what China expects to do in the near future with it's three automotive brands, Chery (which will manufacture compact cars for Dodge), Changfeng, and Geely.
Basically, Hyundais are cheaper the extremely low labor costs outweigh the importation fees, thus making the vehicles and their parts cheaper.
I hope this has answered your question. If you have any more, please feel free to ask.

The Hyundai has proven over the years to only get better. When they first came out they were crap, but the new Hyundai's the Sonata and Elantra are very nice cars. I drove the Sonata for a bit while my car was getting some detailing and I did not like it as much as the Elantra. The new Sonata's have a V-6 which is nice but at the price of gas these days the Elantra is much better on gas and drives alot better to me. Plus alot more inexpensive than the Sonata too. Hyundai offers very good warranties on their cars and they are backed 100% I actually have had no major problems with mine at all after 2 yrs.

Your question made me smile thinking back to the 80's and 90's when I was buying at dealer auctions and a Hyundai would come through the lane and everyone incl myselv would scatter to other lanes...
But times have changed I never would have thought I would live till the day I would be recommend Hyundai's
From about 2000 and on they make an excellent product with a good warranty, I know most people only have Honda - Toyota - Nissan on their brains, but if you consider the money factor, Hyundai is an excellent buy...
As for them being cheaper...its like buying designer jeans, you can get the same jeans for much less without the label ( honda )

Hyundai is a great car company. They are cheaper because they do not have the same overhead like an american car. My wife has had 2. My next car will be one. They do have a 10yr/100,000 mile warrenty. They were the first to do that. American car are now trying to catch up.

When they originally came out back in the mid to late 80's they were God-awful and developed a bad rep. In the last few years the quality has improved greatly and they are a pretty good value. There are better cars, but if low price and economy is more important to you than anything else, you may want to consider them among others.

Yes they are probably the worst car on the market as we speak. If you want a cheap car go for a the Toyotas or some Hondas.
But what ever you do not by a Hyundai or a KIA!

If you want to go foreign go with Toyota, they are by far the best.
They have reasonable prices too, the new Yaris starts at $13,500 and is sweet. I have a celica myself and love it. In my opinion they are the most well built, reliable cars on the market, they are well worth looking into. They will last forever too.
