My cousin just got engaged and I know who he is going to marry because she is like part of the family. Do I get her something she would like or do I get something they will need. They already live together. I need suggestions.

1. Anna, be upfront with them & tell them that you would like to give them a gift card.

2. What store would they like it to go to?

3. Give only the amount of money that will not set you back. Celebration is not about bankruptcy — it's about being supportiveness of their lifestyle decision.

4. The reasonably priced gift is just frosting on the big cake they'll be getting.

Good Luck and Warm Wishes!

Technically, the etiquette says you are not supposed to bring a gift to an engagement party and the couple should not be expecting gifts either. Rather, an engagement party is a time to celebrate the couple and most importantly, to introduce both families to each other. Gifts are not only not necessary but detract from the purpose of the party. If you really feel that you must give something it is best to keep it small and give the gift privately since most other guests will not be bringing anything.

I would see if they have a registry... Depending on how much you can afford, I would think a gift between $30-$50 would be sufficient, although some people spend $100 on gifts. It just depends on what you are comfortable with...

Get them a piece of crystal, it is foolproof, is "gifty", special, and also for the house, perhaps a heavy vase, or a unique candy dish. These should cost 20-30 dollars for something nice.

To be honest, I would wait for the wedding to gift a gift. I certainly would not give one for both this party and the wedding. Nor is it expected, unless someone is REALLY greedy.
