As far as stock production cars, they all equally suck. It depends on what you want. MPH, ET, Consistantcy, etc...
As far as drag race vehicles the best would be a 4 link dragster. They are light weight not affected by wind as much as a door car and with the 4 link set up the chassis can be set up to bite and be more forgiving on rough tracks. The down side to this is that they are pretty expensive.
The small block chevy motors are probably the most cost effective because of the range of aftermarket parts for them, and there durability. Being durable and easy on the wallet makes them the most widely used motor in drag racing on the sportsman level.

All cars are tunable, but in general if you want really fast you need cubic inches, the more cubic inches the more horse power you can achieve, all it really takes is cubic dollars, but to be usable cubic inches you need a car with a full frame, unless you don't care if you twist the body a bit, I have found it easier to get out of the car when the doors still open after a pass myself, you will also need a little suspension work done so you can get your cubic inches to hook to the ground, and not to mention the safety equipment you'll need depending on how fast the car is. Oh yeah and you'll need a bank load of cubic dollars to fix the things that break from the abuse they are put through each and every pass.
But in the end it's all worth it, as long as you're having fun, and are staying safe, I've found that the Drag strip is a wonderfully safe place to Drag Race at, and at the same time make new friends.

Tons of people have Ford Mustangs, so getting parts and info is fairly easy. Same thing for any car with a small block Chevy in it. There really is no "best car" for drag racing. No matter what, it takes knowledge, experience, and a little cash. The faster you want to go, the more it will cost you.

Anything made in America with a V8. Or anything with an American V8 in it.
You said "tune" so maybe you want a foreign ricer thingy. In that case, I'd start with anything that's all wheel drive and already came with a turbo.......like a Talon or a Subaru.
If you want the fastest car ever. Use a stick shift.
If you want the fastest car ever that's consistent and doesn't break stuff use an automatic.

87 through 93 5.0 Mustang. Light wieght, tons of parts. No need for NOS or expensive turbo to go fast. Mainly just gears and exhaust can get you into the 13's. Just make sure it a 5 speed car. Autos can be fast too it just takes more work.

A good choice would be A late 80's through early/mid-90's Ford Mustang 5.0 liter V8.Those engines are capable of producing enough horsepower (while holding together)to twist the frame rear-end and anything else in between.

I would go with a car that has many options, like for american i would go with like a late 90 s mustang or a chevy camaro. If you wanting to go import, go with like a civic, integra. all depends what you can afford, those would probrably be some of the cheapest cars to start off with.

Thats a easy on to answer, one with a sponsor. Bracket racing is a good place to start but you will need about $25000to be competetive. WE have more than that in our engine, not counting electronics, suspension, chasis and drive line
