NO, they are being polite, and that word beats the hell out of "girls", "broads", I could go on and on.
Jesta.
If you are addressing children, then "girls" is OK, otherwise, it is condescending and sexist, IMO. I am also in my forties. Don't you think that calling men "boys" sounds tacky? I do.

I think it's even more annoying when other women say "ladies." If you knew me, you'd know that I'm about as far from being a true "lady" as I can get. :D
It really is annoying though--it sounds cheesy to me. I'd rather be referred to as a woman, a gal, heck--even call me girlie, lol. You can stop with the lady thing though.

This is a generational thing (plus the way it's said matters). For myself, being of the older generation, I would regard 'lady' as a compliment unless there were evidence to the contrary from other signals. I wouldn't lose sleep over it unless you had other reasons to be worried.

Heck no, its not annoying. Consider some of the names they could call you and I would say that "ladies" is a complement.

No, not at all! What I find annoying is a man refering to a group of ladies as "hey guys" I recently had a male waiter refer to our ( group of 4 ladies) as "hey guys" are you ready to order? We gently set him straight that there were no "guys" at our table.

No....not necessarily. I think it can be a term of respect or endearment, particularly in the south. depends on the attitude of it's user.
on second thought it certainly beats "old lady", _itch, "my girl",nag, etc

Amazing...absolutely amazing.
in virtually all of hip hop (and dont give me two or three exceptions in an attempt to obfuscate) women are referred to as "b!tches" and "hoes", and these records sell by the MILLIONS...........now we have a problem with "lady"?!?
