my bf of 6yrs asked me to marryhim but i thought he was kidding so i laughed it off then his mum told me he was dead serious and i felt terrible so he asked me again and i said i need to think about it. i love him loads and he's a really good guy so why do i wanna stay as we are?

When you're just dating someone, you have a way out, a "back door" that you can use to get out of the relationship if you need it. Once you get married that disapears and that can be a scarry thing for some people, even if it's just in your subconcious.
