Aren't the similarities interesting. Soon after adopting Christianity, the Roman Empire collapsed. Unable to sustain itself due to a bloated empire, religious expansionism, greed and an over-extended military. Sound familiar?

YAY! Here comes the new Dark Ages!

By the way, as an example of what you are talking about:

The phrase 'It's all Greek to me' came about during the Dark Ages. At the time, the only people in Europe (generally) who were actively reading and writing were christian monks. The reason for this was because the church discouraged the 'common man' from being educated. They taught that the only thing that people need to know was what the church taught them.
The church also blacklisted the Greek language, so much so that it became 'lost' for a time in Europe. The reason being that they saw the Greeks as decadent and immoral. (And freethinkers.)
The phrase 'It's all Greek to me' was written by monks who, when recopying books would use this phrase whenever they came across anything in Greek.
In other words 'I don't know because we don't understand it.'

PS That idiot above me who wrote that the Roman Empire collapsed because of ABORTION of all things, really, really needs to go get an education. Such ignorance is staggering.

I totally agree...the more religious a country the sooner their demise. Every country that got overly zealous in pushing its faith down the throats of its citizens yet still the most immoral, fell quickly.

Absolutely, America is on its way to quick destruction.

Ever think of all of this???

When Greece and Rome fell as world powers,

1. Religion was on the rise,
2. Sporting events were more popular than politics
3. Homosexuality was on the rise
4. Crime rates were booming
5. The poor became poorer and the rich richer with a tight squeeze on the middle class.

When these great nations fell, there was a great depression and the world went into a "DARK" period. The Dark ages were run under a totally THEOCRACY...the Church and religions ruled everything. The last time religious people ruled the world it was called THE DARK AGES!

Please don't go thinking that too much religion is good for a country. The facts and history show differently!!!

First, Rome never "adopted" Christianity. The Edict of Milan in 313 by Constantine made it legal, not the state religion. The reason for the collapse was the invasion of the Germanic tribes, not their religious choices. Your argument does not logically follow your facts.

Rome's economic collapse was more from excessive taxation and massive social programs. Sound familiar?

We don't need Christianity to collapse America, we're doing a fine job ourselves. Individualism is making American collapse. How can we be the United States if all we focus on is individualism. Don't get me wrong, I believe in individual rights but there comes a point where we begin to think of nothing except ourselves. Unfortunately, we've come to that point. Countries don't survive on selfishness and the "me" factor. Don't try to pick a fight with a certain religious belief just because you don't agree with it.

Different times. If the United States fell into a similar state there wouldn't be someone else moving in because the UN would wind up stopping it. Otherwise every current developing country would be owned by a developed country (politically at least).

You're wrong, but you're also correct. What Rome did was mingle church and state on the institutional level. Today, American evangelicals have embraced a Civil Religion that is based on mixing church and state at the expressional level; Christian expression with patriotism.

There are dangerous similarities and books have been written on the subject.

Hold on a minute here bucko. Don't blame the Christians for the fall of Rome. The Emperors were going daffy. They over taxed people. Not to mention they lived exceptionally sinful lives as Pagans. No, No. don't pass this off on to the Christians who suffered greatly at the hands of Rome. The Romans spent their days lets say, eating, drinking and be merry a little too much and it did them in.

National unity is the result of commonly held culture, beliefs and institutions. The nation that is tolerant of all ideas, even the most aberrant, can not be unified...it is a contradiction in logic. The America of today is for everything and stands for nothing.

Rome collapsed because of a Civil War. I think we'll be okay. It was already declining before Christianity, and didn't collapse BECAUSE of it. It helped, though... Besides, America is going to collapse eventually; it's inevitable.

There are a lot of reasons Rome collapsed. I sincerely doubt any serious scholar of the subject would consider it a reason at all. Despite what you believe to be similarities, the big difference is that Rome was directly under attack at the time of its collapse.
