If your friend just started exercise: The body recognizes the need to adapt to increased demand. It tends to save what one could call quick-access energy or glycogen. This is basically a 500-calorie pound (glucose & water - most pounds are the equivalent of 3,500 calories). This quick-access energy tends to cause a temporary weight-gain in those beginning to exericse. Don't be discouraged!!

If she has been exercising for a while, she may indeed have built muscle (which is more dense and weighs more in less space than fat). Also a good thing is that muscle burns more calories in a day than the same amount of fat.

Finally, it is easy to overeat when you first start exercising, so if your friend's clothes are not fitting any better (which would be the case if she is developing muscle and losing fat), then she might want to reevaluate her eating habits.

this is probably because when you work out you lost body bat but gain muscle mass at the same time. Muscle weighs a little more than fat too. So, she is getting in shape, just gaining muscle. If she just wants to lose weight, tell her to work out with only running or light weights. Heavy weights makes you gain more muscle. Hope this helped you.

If she is eating fatty foods and drinking alot of carbonated drinks...that would explain it. I have struggled with my weight for a long time. Tell your friend to take her weight and divide it by 3...that is how many ounces of WATER she/he needs to drink a day. Believe it or not, just cutting out soda pop and drinking alot of water with exercise works! There is also a book that helped me as well "Eat Right 4 your type" It works with your blood type and tells you what makes you gain and retain weight. So far doing this has made me lose 40 pounds.

if you friend is exercising, she will be gaining muscle which weighs more than fat. make sure she continues to eat healthy foods and drink lots of water. she can take measurements of her waist, arms, hips, legs, etc to see if the weight is actually redistributing. she will begin to look more toned.
a healthy BMI is more important than a weight alone. have her look up her BMI online -it takes into consideration her height/weight/gender/bone size.
