A pimple is an infection which the body generates a stuff called puss to fight it. For a long time it was thought that puss was the actual stuff of the infection, now we know better.

Puss is created when the bodies’ immune system attacks the infection. What you see are live bacteria cells surrounded by white corpuscles, T cells and other substances that the body generates to fight the infection.

When you drain a pimple you are removing both some of the infection and some of the bodies support systems that fight it. Of course you body can replace them, and the bacteria still under your skin can still breed.

Pimples are caused by dead skin cells that get stuck in small cavities like blemishes and pores in your skin, even hair follicles.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pimples
“A pimple is a result of a blockage of the skin's pore.
Inside the pore are sebaceous glands which produce sticky sebum. When the outer layers of skin shed (as it does continuously), the dead skin cells left behind may become 'glued' together by the sticky sebum. This causes a blockage in the pore. The sebaceous glands produce more sebum which builds up behind the blockage, and this sebum harbours bacteria (P.Acnes bacteria). Since the body's natural defence against bacteria is primarily phagocytes (white blood cells), these rush to the site behind the blockage (where the bacteria are). This is what gives some pimples the 'whiteheads' (unless the Phagocytes are deeper in the skin, which means you can't see the 'white' caused by them). The white blood cells then destroy (by phagocytosis) the bacteria to prevent infection.”

The best way to fight them is to clean your skin to remove dirt and those old skin cells before they turn into a problem.

Wikipedia continues:
“Common over-the-counter medications for pimples are Benzoyl peroxide and/or salicylic acid. Both medications can be found in many creams and gels used to treat acne through topical application. Both medications help skin slough off easier, which helps to remove bacteria faster. A regimen of keeping the affected skin area clean plus the regular application of these topical medications is usually enough to keep acne under control, if not at bay altogether. 1-2% of the population is allergic to Benzoyl peroxide treatments.”

I don't get whiteheads often,...but I'm almost 60 ad these are more an issue with younger folks. Usually when I get them it's in the side creases of my nose, and I usually feel a soreness well before I even see them.

However, contrary to what others have said,... I ALWAYS "pop" mine and drain them out! I've NEVER had a problem with subsequent infections caused by using a tiny sharp needle either. But I either dip the needle tip in 90% or higher concentration rubbing alcohol, or run the tip of the needed under a small bic lighter flame for a few seconds.

You don't even feel the needle, because you are NOT going directly into the sub layers of tissue containing the nerves. I go in from the side, where the skin is painless to poke into. Doesn't take much and then I squeeze and wipe away the white puss a few times. I follow that with a good scrubbing with soap and water, and dry well.

Doing this will help to heal the pimple 10X faster than waiting for your body to do it by itself, and even more important most or ALL of the pain associated with the pimple virtually disappears immediately!

I did a search here to find out what the white puss was made of, (although I suspected white blood cells made up a great deal of the substance :-) In fact, I JUST pop'd one on the right side of my nose crease. It was so small I didn't even see it without my magnifying headband on. (I was a Bench Jeweler/diamond setter for 35 years)

Get um when they're SMALL and I believe you reduce the chance of any scars,....and the discomfort disappearing immediately well worth the effort.

....YMMV

cheers,

What Comes Out Of Pimples

It's called puss. And as tempting as it might be (and I know it's very tempting) you should pop your pimples, let them heal on their own (of course with some help from you using toners and other facial products). By time you're 30, you might regret popping all those pimples if your face looks like a crater. Doesn't happen to everyone that pops zits, but it is a likely side-effect from not being patient.

It's not hemoglobin (that carries oxygen to your cells).
It's pus - a large (in a microscopic sense) collection of white blood cells that fight infection, because that is what a pimple is in a sense.
An abscess is a larger collection of pus that needs to be drained. A pimple is a just a small, small abscess.

It's pus. sometimes it can help to get rid of a pimple and sometimes it pushes the bacteria back down into the clogged duct and makes it worse. Invest in a cheap mud mask to put on each pimple before popping and it will help draw all of the pus up out of the duct. Then one little squeeze and it will come out on it's own.

NATURAL ACNE PROTOCOL
1/ Never, ever touch your face.
2/ Use 3 facecloths to wash your face, one to soap on, one to soap off with very hot water, one to rinse off with ice cold water, in that order, once a day.
3/ If you are under 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A once a day with a full meal
4/ If you are over 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A twice a day with a full meal.
Do not get pregnant while taking vitamin A. Do not take any more, like Accutane, it will stop you growing.
5/ Never, ever. pick, squeeze or pop your spot. Read number 1 again.
6/ Do this for 90 days.
7/ Invest in a brand new pillow and 2 new or more pillow cases to double bag' your pillow. HOT wash every couple of days.
Source:
A bit of advice given to me as a teenager, a bit of science as I am studying allergic reactions and vitamin A is a part of that. A bit of research: I sat in a lecture at the back and watched the acne prone pick at their faces, those with the worse acne touched their faces 32 times in an hour, the clearest complexions didn't touch their faces even once. I have circumstantial evidence that acne is the result of dermatophyte transfer from hands to face...where it does not get washed off and is well fed by hormones, sweat a
nd oil...just a hypothesis... But it would explain why vitamin A is so effective as vitamin causes skin to remove dermatophytes.

The secret is never to touch the spots

Oil (puss) that clogged the pore up. That is all there is up there is oil! You shouldn't pop your pimples, but if you do make sure you get the "grainy like thing" out too, that is the source of the problem! And don't squeeze so hard you bleed too much! That can cause bad scarring.
