Ahem. In order to pass SECOND place, you must originally have been in THIRD place. You would then replace the person who is in SECOND place, who then becomes THIRD place, therefore YOU are now in SECOND place. In order to be in first place, you would have to already be in SECOND place and then overtake the person in FIRST place.
I know I won't get the ten points; several other people correctly answered before me (I knew the answer before seeing theirs, but I can't prove that....)
But no, the guys are not the only ones with the correct answer--I should be proof enough of that--but alas, I've heard the riddle before.
I need to find a riddle that I haven't heard some variation of. It's too easy to figure out the answers if you've heard them several times before; how do I know I'm puzzling them anew and not merely remembering?

you'd be seond place just as long you didn't knock out the original second place guy because of the frustration of being in third and get disqualified because then you'd be nothing
