My cat had a urinary tract infection about a year ago. He use to pee on our bed, the vet said it was a way of letting us know something was wrong. Which is strange anyhow since he sleeps there constantly and cats typically won't use the bathroom where they sleep. Anyways, we got him on some antibiotics and he quite as soon as the infection cleared up.

There are quite a few answers to the question. First, let's start with it's every day life - has something changed? New home? New members of the home (cat, dog, person)? New furniture? New cat litter? New litter box? New food? Did you move a piece of furniture?
Cats stress very easily and take a while to adapt to change (as I recall, two years is not considered a long time for cats at all - my shy kitty took two years before she became a living room cat, was under the bed much of those two years).
How many cats vs boxes? (there should be one more box then cats - I've read that on a number of sites)
How about YOUR life? Are you working longer hours, or sleeping more? You spending more time with a significant other, that perhaps you used to spend with the cat?
Cats own the house - you only pay rent by putting the actual roof over their head and feeding them - so they get angry when you start to neglect them.
If you're confident that NOTHING has changed, then may be the cat's trying to tell you that she's not feeling well. SO, off to the vet you two go!
I've got a cat that gets crystals in her pee fairly often. I've learned that she pees out of the box and I call the vet to get her meds. After the first serving of medicine, she stops! I have gotten to the point, though, that I can tell the difference between crystals in it and one that accidentally didn't 'make it' to the kitty toilet!
Go out to all of the kitty sites - cat stores, cat food. Loads of information out there!! You'll learn a lot!

Some female cats spray just as much as male cats do if they haven't been spayed/neutered. Female cats will only do it when they're in heat though. If you're sure your cat isn't in heat, it probably is something about the litter box. Some cats refuse to share litter boxes. Some won't go in a dirty litter box.

It could also be an adjustment problem if you just adopted it. For 2-3 after we got our cat it used the bathroom everywhere except its litter box.

It could be a number of things:
-male cats spray to mark territory, if they ahve not been "fixed"
-it could be a medical condition where the cat may not have great bladder control
-the litter box may not be clean -or- they may not like the litter (my cats hate the big flaky litter and like the clumping kind better)
-or, you could have irritated them about something and they are basically "retialiating" until you make up (my cat peed on my fiancee twice b/c he was mad at him...now thy're fine)

I would take the cat to the vet to make sure that it is not a serious medical condition first.

Your cat could be marking it's territory (if it's a male). Also, the litterbox may need cleaned or the cat may not like the type of litter. It could also be a urinary tract infection. Clean the litterbox every day, and you might try changing the litter. If that doesn't work, have the vet check your cat.

Well, there can be quiet a few reasons. I read everybodies answers and my final dicision is the litter box is dirty. Because whenever my cats' liter box is dirty they always go on the carpet.

Maybe the cat has a urinary tract infection or blockage. Have you had your cat neutered? That could cause it if he hasn't been neutered. many things, I would have the cat checked at the vet. I found a product that gets the urine smell out of carpet fast you can get it at anti-icky-poo.net I couldn't believe how it worked.

If its an indoor cat, check that the litter box is clean. If its male, he should probably be fixed to calm him down. Males tend to mark their territory more when not fixed. Or, if theres something new in the cats environment, like another pet, new roommate or something it could be stressed out.

Because she doesn't like something about her litter box, be it the place, the litter or how clean it is.
