Italy is where it started. They had to have an idol to worship and pictures for people to see because most of the Christian common folks couldn't read. It been bandied about that the early face used was a friar working in the Vatican.

There have literally been hundreds of thousands of images of Jesus painted, sculpted, imprinted, carved etc over the centuries. Whomever did the art naturally created the image from a knowledge of what they knew at the time ie their own anatomy or ethnic background.
Some of the most well known depictions were created by the masters of art - Michelangelo, Raphael, DaVinci.... these are very enduring images - obviously not accurate, but enduring just the same.
No one in this day and age would say that any of these images are accurate. The Catholic inspiration for the image of Jesus was the shroud of Turin, supposedly the actual cloth that the body of Jesus was wrapped in after he was crucified.
You must understand that until very recently, (the past 250 years) there has been very little for the majority of peoples of the civilized world to focus on or study other the scriptures. Therefore 99% of art, reading, writings, were inspired by the scriptures. Most art was commissioned to be religious or worshipful in nature, therefore images were caste and drawn according to the artists ideas.

They're not ' Christians ' and that is not Jesus.
It comes from the Renaissance errors.
( Exodus 20: 4 - 5, 1st Corinthians 11:14 )

The image of Jesus has been one that's evolved throughout the years. The earliest depictions of Jesus are different from the regular image we associate with him today. (Long hair, etc). These conceptions came about through popular romantic artwork.

Actually if you look in different cultures you will find very different images of Jesus. Each culture and race tends to create images of Him resembling themselves, even though we all know intellectually that He no doubt looked like the average Israeli of today.

Western European Caucasians. Where else? And totally wrong now that science has shown Jesus most likely looked like any other Eastern Mediteranean 1st century male. Certainly not white with straight hair!

I think the image of a white Jesus comes from Catholism, but since we didn't have cameras back in His time, we don't know for sure what He looked like.
What's important is what He did for us.

I don't know where we got it from but, an artist may have lived while Jesus was on the earth and he may have painted a picture of Him.

John tells of his appearance in Revelation, also a couple of different places tell of his features. There is no real description though, that I have read.
