THey vary quite a bit. At a silent retreat, participants do not talk among themselves. They will hear talks, usually, by a spiritual director or speaker, and then go off by themselves to reflect on what they have heard -- usually taking walks, or sitting quietly. Silent praying is encouraged. At other retreats, there may be discussions among the people on retreat and even some activities. They're usually held someplace where there is no television, radio, telephone interruptions, etc., so people can have time to unwind and refresh themselves spiritually and in other ways, also. Someone else does the cooking so the people on retreat are taken care of. And yes, there are usually worship services throughout the retreat.

I think you should ask your sister. Since she actually goes to the retreat she can tell you exactly what they do there and I'm pretty sure that she will not say a word about any cheerleaders.

Some of them that I have seen have practically nothing to do with God and many times the leaders do unscrupulous things. It really depends on the group and people involved.

I am sure you are close. I guess they pray a lot and listen to Bible stories. I don't suppose they allow alcohol either, probably no sex too. It would seem boring to me. One hour of church every couple of weeks is enough to recharge my spiritual battery.
