good candles "burn" the wax, that is the fuel not the wick. good candle isn't going to produce any wax, when it burns down naturally it'll use most all of the wax.
you might just buy the deep discount candles for this look. you'll have to tip the candle and have it drip down as you'd like it.

The best (and quickest) way to get this effect is to use a paint stripping heat gun and get the wax to melt in channels. Alternatively you can hold a candle horizontally when lit so it drips alot of wax onto your holder.

get some cheap ones and burn them through the day whilst watching it depends on size and width can take hours keep an eye on them though..you could whilst wax is melted try a TINY tip but put something protective underneath and use with caution
