In the Dallas/Ft.Worth area we have a building supplier called "Seconds and Surplus" which is, as it's name implies. You may be able to find a similar company that has building materials for under retail in your area. Then, it's just a matter of the right tools and plans you can probably find on the internet.
Don't forget eBay also has items like this probably showng up once in a while.

My brother built a bar in his lounge by using corrigated iron. Then he painted it a deep burgandy with a painted shiny black top.
Corrigated iron should be standing up. That way you can put a curve in it if you want to.
The iron looks great if it's old with a few nail holes and lumps on it. The top was made out of an old door.
The finished product looks like "Old Settler" furniture.

make it out of plywood and 2x4's all available at home depot or lowes probably cost less than $150 to make
