There are a lot of different ways to help this problem.

Medication-wise, generally, people are prescribed an antidepressant that has potential to help with anxiety. The most common I have heard for anxiety patients are lexapro, celexa, and paxil. Everyone responds differently to antidepressants, so it is common to have to try a couple before you find the right one. For example, when I started taking paxil, it made me more anxious as a side effect and I switched to celexa, which helped tremendously!

There are also benzodiazepines such as klonopin, xanax, and valium. These are helpful to a lot of people, but are addictive and make you tired. I got hooked on xanax and eventually needed to go to the hospital because it is very dangerous to stop taking this type of medication cold-turkey. It can be fatal. That is something to think about before you decide to take benzos.

Counseling and therapy can also be helpful. For some, it helps enough that you don't need medication, but for most it is best that you have both. Medication can help you while you start therapy and work through issues. Eventually, you may be able to stop medications. Some people stay on them forever. Just depends on the severity and pathology of the problem!

I hope this helps!
