If you are DRIVING (travelling by land) to Canada:
YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT TO ENTER CANADA OR RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES.
From the U.S. State Department website:
"Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by >>> air <<< between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable."
"As early as January 1, >>> 2008 <<< , ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by >>> land <<< or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security."

A lot of people are confused by the whole thing. You do NOT need a passport to travel between Canada and the US by land until January 1 2008. It's AIR TRAVEL that now requires a passport for travel between Canada and the US. I drove to Pittsburgh, PA two weeks ago, and I didn't need not need a passport to enter the US. Of course, you still need some form of identification such as a drivers license, or birth certificate.

No matter how you are coming to Canada, the laws have not changed. What you are referring to is the "Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative". That is an American based law to control or monitor who comes "into" the USA. Not into Canada.
The way the new law is worded is "entry or re-entry" to the USA. "Entry" means you are entering the USA not having began your trip there. "Re-entry" is starting in the USA and then coming back to it.
Using those "entry and re-entry" definitions, you will not need a passport to drive from Michigan "to" Canada. After January 2008 you will need a passport by land (driving) or water to "re-enter or re-enter" the USA. Currently the "enter or re-enter" requiring a passport is for the USA for air travel.
Entry requirements for Canada are an original birth certificate (to prove your citizenship) and a piece of government issued photo ID. (eg a drivers license) These are not set to change any time soon. (you can use a passport, but it is not a requirement)

No, only by air at this time. See below:
Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)
The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Yes and no. You don't need a passport to go to Canada, but you will need one to return to the US.
If you don't have one and still want to attempt the trip, you will need to be able to prove your country of citizenship. Lack of a passport will give customs the grounds to refuse entry into the country. I have crossed the border many many times. If I have any specific questions I will call the border crossing office where I plan to cross and I will explain my situation. They are often very helpful. Now get a passport.

Recent immigration changes have made it compulsory that everyone travel in and out of the US ( and to the Canada ) must carry the Passport. So whether you fly or drive, do carry your passport when you crossing the US boarder.

Because of the new laws, yes you need a passport... but you don't need visa... just a passport. When you enter US you need that passport.
