There are a lot of DVD players that will play avi (DivX) files, I have one myself and burn down a lot of avi files so I can watch them on our big wide-screen TV. Check the documentation for your player, and if it supports DivX, it might support Windows files too.

I don't think that most dvd's will play .avi or .wmp (media player) files but I do know that most newer DVD players will play DIVX files. So if you can manage to encode your video clips into DIVX, check your DVD manual to see if there is support for it.
