Van Gogh is not that old! However, just because something was painted in the same period doesn't mean it's worth anything at all. If you don't want to carry it around with you, take a photo and ask art dealers/auction houses in your area.

The curator at your local art museum will answer your questions. I did it with an old piece of art that I knew nothing about.

Go to any art gallery that specializes in work from that period. 15 minutes of research will show you which ones are appropriate.

You can take it in to the big auction houses like Christie's or Sotheby's. They will authenticate it and even value it for you free of charge. They will auction it also for a big fee!

look in the yellow pages under antiques. there should be a dealer that can appraise and authenticate your painting, and perhaps point you in the right direction for selling it. DO NOT sell it until you are sure of it's value.
