The Law of Karma is based on INTENT.

Example - if you intentionally step on an insect and kill it, you acquire bad karma. However, if you unintentionally step on an insect and kill it, you don't acquire bad karma.

It all depends on a person's perspective, and what their intentions are in killing an insect.

If we value, and respect all living things, especially human beings, we will not kill.
Many religions commandments say,
"Thou Shall Not Kill.", but it does not say
"Thou Shall Not kill human beings only."

So it depends on a person's perspective.

In Buddhism, Buddhists, and/or Students of Buddhism do their best to never kill any insects because they value all life (it has nothing to do with rebirth or reincarnation).
All Life is Sacred, and valuable and precious
Buddhists believe that if we can so easily kill insects with wrong intent, than next we will be killing animals, then possibly people, who may not think exactly the same as us.

Prudence and Wisdom must also be highly considered. And this is the Buddhist philosophy: ie., if there is an insect that carries a very harmful, or especially a deadly disease which could cause death, then of course one would have to kill it, if it is impossible to safely set it free. One would not allow his or her spouse or children to be threatened with death.
But in most cases these situations are rare.

Hindu's and Buddhists do use and practice there common sense.

Why are you asking such a question ?

Again, we must always look at the thoughts and intents of our hearts and minds, before killing an insect. If WE do not value the sacredness of life, what is to say that we won't - down the road, willfully kill a bear, a dear, and eventually willfully kill another human being ?

I Highly respect the advice of Buddhism which teaches "Do No Harm to any living thing."

Yes Unless it is to protect ones Lively hood (crops) We should not unnecessarily kill any bug or plant or animal. Krishna Consciousness and the Vedas say this. Every living entity has a soul. The proof of the soul is the life within anything. Other wise if their is no soul it would be dead matter. All bodies no matter what species consist of material elements and the soul is what resides within. for all info go to harekrishnatemple.c Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta
For Christian understanding of this read Gospelof the Nazirenes- (original new testament before King Constantine misconstrued so many things. - google gospelofthenazirenes.c Christ actually taught karma, reincarnation and Vegetarianism and hell being a temporary place to get ones very bad karma.

I feel kinda bad when I inevitably do it on the spur of the moment, I think of the millions of years of evolution it took and I just stomped on all of it...but my home must be sterile of life as much as possible... outside it's still a wilderness. I feel great shame when I kill anything and I'm not religious at all...but I still don't want bugs in my home, like the lady above I put a lot of bugs out the window.

Jainism. The monks sweep the floor infront of where they walk so that they will not tread on another life form. They believe that all souls are equal, and that they are reincarnated (I don't know if they use that term.) So any one soul could be that cockroach crawling across the ground.

*I personally try not to kill insects, even in my house. I take them outside.

no religion is against killing insects that i know of. Think of it this way: God is pure and so is his son Jesus, right? Jesus made us sacrifice lambs, so if he makes us do that, how can it be wrong? Killing your own kind is what is wrong; you should still treat animals (not insects) with kindness though
