what will happen. The boys were arrested and now detectives have been to their school to question them. What is going on here? They deserve to be punished and have admitted their guilt.

Because you've mentioned the involvement of detectives, it's apparent that a formal complaint was made. As such, the detectives will write a summary of their investigation and most likely, because juveniles are involved, forward the case through the juvenile court system.

Because your son received part of the money involved, I can assume one of two things; 1) he was involved in the theft and got his "split," or; 2) he was eventually made aware that the money was stolen.

If he was not a part of the actual theft the only charge I'm familiar with that could be levied against him would be (using my own state law) Receipt of Stolen Property.

Because the money was returned, the court will look favorably towards him knowing that he eventually took responsibility for his actions.

Most likely there will be (for ALL the offenders) court ordered restitution, probation, and possibly some sort of court costs or fines.

Best wishes!

The only real question here is whether or not your son KNEW the money was stolen when he got it. If he knew it was stolen than what is happening is exaclty what SHOULD happen to anyone who STEALS. The amount of money is irrelevant. If he knew it was stolen he is a THIEF and should be arrested and prosecuted. Now, on the other hand, if he was not aware that it was stolen coming clean to the detective will go a long way. Just tell them exactly what happened and that is your best bet.
