AH a tricky question!!

Here's an answer for you: Anything can float regardless of density, if it has enough surface area to hold the surface tension.

Example: a sheet of metal that is curved with the bowed-in area down. this will float if it displaces enough water.

during WWII boats were made out of concrete due to metal shortages, but due to the shape it would displace enough water to actually float.

This is technically impossible but if the object is small enough it may be more dense than water and not be able to break the force of the surface tension of the water. This is not technically floating but it achieves the same effect. For example a steel needle is denser than water but you can get it to stay above the water. (Ice is less dense than liquid water)

FYI I think that technically the person who said ice is wrong. Liquid water is more dense than ice - H2O is the exception to the solid-denser-than-liquid rule. Ice crystals have tiny spaces between the molecules, and since it's less dense it floats on its liquid form.

Real answer: nothing. If it is more dense, it will sink. If it is equally dense it might float as long as no force pushes it downward.

ICE.
Everyone knows that ice floats on water, but did you know that this is an abnormal physical property of solid/liquid state of water? The more normal physical property is for the solid of a compound to sink in its own liquid.
