You could also project it onto the canvas using a special projector like the artograph tracer

(or maybe a powerpoint projector, I'm not familiar with those).

I just do it by eye, sketching the basic shapes with thinned-down paint and a script brush (holds lots of paint), then block in the larger areas with the base colour, and build it up from there.

To make a painting from a photograph you take the photograph and make a 2in. margin vertically then you keep on doing that with 2in spaced line Vertically . Then you do the same with the piece of paper the same size of the painting surface. After you do that you do the same exact thing on the photo and the piece of paper, but this time horizontally. Draw the photo using the grids on the piece of paper of the same size of he painting surface. the trace the outline of the picture from the piece of paper to the painting surface.If that does not work buy tracing paper and trace on there.

Use a system of gridlines. Thast's how artists are precise in their marks and paint the right places.
