Eighteen inches. This was set in the National Firearms Act. Sure, you could have it shorter, but then it would be an NFA firearm, which requires licensing and a tax be paid to the federal government to make posession of the firearm legal.

In most, if not all states it is now, illegal to alter the length of a shotgun or any other barrel. However, you can get around this by purchasing a barrel of the desired length and installing it on your shotgun. 18 inches is the minimum legal length in all states.

18" is the legal length. the correct way to measure it is to slide the tape in side the barrel (be sure the gun is not loaded!!!) to the bolt this is the length of the barrel

In the US, 18" barrel length & 26" overall length. Anything shorter requires registration and a $200.00 tax stamp.
