What is the difference between needing a "retainer" and needing "braces?"?

Is a retainer for less of a problem with your teeth and braces are for teeth that need more fixing?

no. first you get braces. when you get braces off, you get a retainer. braces align your teeth and the retainer is so your teeth "remember" where their new positions are so they don't shift back into the old positions.
