I've had him since he was 5 weeks old. He's a very happy little guy. Could this be a birth defect? I don't care if they stand up or not, it gives him his own little look for them to be floppy. Most people don't think he's full blooded chihuahua, but I know he is. My friend had both the mother and father. None of her other litters have had this problem.

John S are you kidding me. I've never heard of soaking his ears in glue or rubber cement. I'd never do that, even if it were true. His little floppy ears are part of my Sami. There's nothing physically wrong with him. He's very healthy and active. It doesn't bother me in the least. He's short haired so there's not hair pulling his ears down.

Thanks for all the input. I'd never, ever concider getting them surgically corrected. His ears don't bother me in the least he's unique. I have always massaged his ears from the beginning. He only had one other litter mate so his ears weren't damaged by chewing from his litter mates. I was with him from the moment he was born until I brought him home, 5 days a week. Helped deliver him and his brother I'm not concerned, just tired of people making comments about him not really being a chihuahua.

BS - don't believe John S - NOTHING will change a 3 year old dogs ears other than surgery. The cartilidge has formed and hardened - no tape, glue, gum, paste, hat or earmuff is going to make a floppy ear stand up at this point.
Enjoy your pups floppy ears - it adds to his charm. He's unique!

This isn't going to be what you want to hear, but chances are his ears will not stand up if they aren't doing it now.
I dont know very much about the way a newborn chihuahua looks, but from my experience from working at a vet clinic i can tell you that even VERY young puppies already have erect ears.
If you're sure he is a purebred, grab his papers (if you have them) and contact the breeder. You may be able to get your money back. However, since it has been so long, there may be nothing you can do legally.
I suggest taking him to a vet to make sure the cartiledge in his ears is not damaged.
Good luck.

Maybe he had the cartilage broken when he was a young pup. Could have been chewed on by one of his litter-mates. I have a friend who has 8 chihuahuas and 2 of them don't have the stand up ears. I think they look cute that way. Just the tips of the ears flop over. Is cute. Is his own personality. Makes him special!

DO NOT soak his ears in rubber cement or any other substance! That is the weirdest thing I have ever heard of.
I breed Chihuahuas and while most of them do have ears that stand up, sometimes you get one that they don't stand up. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with your dog, he is just an individual. I wouldn't worry about surgery or any other intervention. Surgery is cruel and other interventions won't probably work.
Just let him be himself and accept him for the precious little adorable creature that he is!

maybe his ear just don't stand up. my cousin has a chihuahua and his ears perk up but flop right at the tip. I'm sure there is NOTHING wrong with your dog, and you're right...he has his own individual style! love him for who he is! ha ha! he's fine, there's nothing wrong with him (at least nothing to the extent you should be worried). some dogs ears perk and others don't. it's totally normal! good luck and later days! :)

some dogs need assistance in the ears standing especially if he has a lot of fur around the ears. most trim the hair around the ears and help them stand with the use of tape but after about a year this is no longer useful

I think that actually sounds really cute, and I would just leave it alone if he's healthy and happy.

Have you tried soaking the ears with glue or rubber cement? I'm a licensed veterinarian and this is common in expediting the process.
