Hives are usually a reaction to an allergen, meaning you've either ingested or come into skin contact with something you're allergic to. Usually taking Benadryl (you can get it over-the-counter at any drug store) will help clear it initially. But you need to find out what's causing it. For instance, if you've changed laundry detergents recently try reverting back to the old one, or a new brand to see if it clears. Write down everything you eat for a few days and decide if something you ingested made it worse. Wash your bed sheets. Most of all, if you feel like your tongue is swelling or it's becoming hard to breathe, get to a doctor.

Hives can be caused by an allergic reaction to something or by stress. I used to get them all of the time from stress. I took a couple of benedryl and the would go away after an hour or so.

There are allot of different allergens that cause allergic reactions and the most common reaction is Hives. Hives is the reaction from an allergy to such things as medications (penicillan), bee stings, or food. Treat it by taking Benedryl or other OTC's anti-histamines.
