i became friends with him because i really liked him. we have been friends for the last 5 years and he considers me to be his best friend. I fell in love with him but he was romantically involved with another girl, so i kept my feelings to myself.
he went abroad to study. we kept in touch via email and phone.
he broke up with her a 6 months back and his calls have increased over this time period. he misses her alot and has started doping to get over her. he misses work and cuts college classes just to think about her. i have been worried about him. he says he loved her and will love no one else.
today he mailed me asking sincere advice on what he should do.
i told him if she meant that much to him, that he should try to work things out with her. and he better do it now than wait for her to come back. what is most important, is that he should be happy.

it broke my heart saying that. but i meant it.

There's no right or wrong in this sort of situation. But if I were you, I would tell him how I feel, since I don't want to leave a situation with any regret. Maybe you are afraid that you will lose his friendship if you do so, but I cannot bear to always see him as just a friend and watch him getting together with other girl(s) over time. I would rather confess, and if he's not meant to be mine, I would move on.

Wow, that had to be tough...you must really care for him.

I would bet that she will be over him and he will be hurt once again.

At this juncture, I would advise you to not get involved with him (rebound syndrome)...let him hook up with one other person and take his revenge out on her. Then tell him how you feel.

In the end, you will probably prevail.

Just let him know that there are other people that care in his life about him, and more girls out there... if you're interested in him, hint that you'd be interested.... he might not know, and think you're just friends, so he's not giving it thought. However don't just tell him you like him immediately; that could ruin a friendship...

You cared enough to put his feelings before your own. You definitely did the right thing.
