Hi there,
I fractured my ankle last summer. It depends on the specific type of break- mine needed surgery. The bones are pinned back together with screws (the number varies due to the type of break). Honestly, surgery isn't that bad, so don't let other people spook you. I was out of the hospital within an hour and a half, took a nap when I got home, and had my appetite back by that night. You have to wear a cast afterwards, usually about 4-8 weeks.
If you have a pretty easy break, you'll just be in a cast for 6-8 weeks. Walking on crutches is the hardest part (or was for me)- make sure to take tiny little steps (no swinging on them Tarzan style, or you WILL fall...experience talking there lol). Your doctor will give you a bunch of different cast colors to choose from. The casts nowadays are much more comfortable than the plaster ones of yore and are reasonably breathable. They also have waterproof, which IMO are less comfortable and not worth it.
One tip about casts- DO NOT GET THEM WET OR DIG AROUND INSIDE THEM!!!
When wet, a cast is the itchiest, most uncomfortable thing known to man. You will be kicking yourself until you can get in for a change. Only take baths, and wrap not one, but TWO layers of garbage bags around it. I wrapped one layer, then a really absorbent towel, then the second layer, and secure with duct tape in a wide swath around the top - works like a charm. Keep your leg out of the tub if at all possible, and be careful standing up (your balance will be altered in a HUGE way). Also, keep your baths as cool as you can stand them. It'll prevent your leg from getting sweaty (and therefore itchy) under the cast.
If you feel the need to itch, don't. It's just that simple. It messes up the padding (lumpy casts are the WORST) and just triggers more itchiness. Take Benadryl and do something to get your mind off it- the urge will only last for a few seconds.
I hope that wasn't too long-winded...good luck! :)
