A few days before the dog is ready to give birth, she may stop eating and start building a "nest" where she plans to have her puppies-if you're lucky, this will be in the whelping box you have prepared for her.

Shortly before whelping, the dog's body temperature will drop to 99 degrees or lower (from a normal temperature of 100 to 102.5).

Approximately 24 hours after her temperature drops, she can be expected to enter the first stage of labor, when the cervix dilates and opens the birth canal for the passage of puppies. At this time, she will pant, strain, appear restless and may perhaps vomit. Vomiting is normal at the onset of labor, but persistent vomiting may be a sign of illness. This stage of labor is followed by actual abdominal straining and production of the puppies and placentas.

Nesting, temperature change, secretivness.

But, no one who doesn't know this should have a pregnant dog. A responsible owner either would have already been through this with a responsible breeder, would not have allowed the dog to get pregnant, or would be under the guidance of the rescue group they are fostering for.

Unless, of course, this was a stray and you are now caring for her. In which case, kudos to you. Make sure all the pups get spayed/neutered and find them good homes.

woo! um, she's panting ALOT...if it's her first time, she could run somewhere because she's not sure what's going on (when my dog was pregnant for the first time, she ran underneath my sisters bed). when it comes near her due date, make sure someone is around her ALL the time!! my mom stayed home for a week when the due date came by for my dog. luckily, we got her and everything was fine. be calm when she's in labour because she is a lot more afraid then you are! she can hardly move when she's ready to give birth so make sure she is already in her "comfort" spot (we cleared out our walk in closet of everything and set it up just for her). good luck! and later days :)

When my dog went into labor, she found a very dark and quiet area, which was under the bed. She had been panting all day, even though it was not hot, and she had not been running around. Between those two signs, we knew she was in labor.

digging/soft scratching of the area around her, restlessness, looking as if she's searching for something. She'll be looking for somewhere to have her puppies. also heavy panting and constant laziness
