Go to http://www.king-charles-spaniel-club.co.uk where you will see that they are two difference breeds. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is larger than the King Charles, has a different shaped head and different shaped muzzle/jaw and they do not look anything like the same breed.

Yes these are different dogs. Actually, they are the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the original King Charles Spaniel which is usually called the English Toy Spaniel now. The English (King Charles) Toy Spaniel is smaller and has a more pug-like look to its face. They are a bit more shy than the friendly, outgoing Cavalier Spaniels. For more info, see the links below.

I just love these dogs - their fur is extremely soft and they are very friendly. However, I already have small dogs and am ready for a larger breed myself.

They are similar in looks, but the King Charles spaniel is smaller and is the true breed, as owned by King Charles 1 of England. The cavalier was only introduced about the 1930's by an American and is now recognised by the kennel club. My friend is an expert on both these breeds, but they are not the same, trust me.

King Charles was the peron who first bred the dogs.
