I have it understood that it can't because the soul is just your mind and it shuts off at death.

You can think you left the body, but it's really the mind playing tricks on you or you're seeing visions.

There are non. The Bible is specific on the matter. When you die all conscience ceases like an extinguished flame. The only hope for an afterlife is thru the grace of your original creator, Jehovah God thru his son Jesus Christ by being resurrected in Gods Kingdom here on earth ruled by Jesus himself. As a Jehovah's Witness i invite you to study the bible accurately and gain the truth of what God says and how to live in harmony with his will and purpose. Next time we knock on your door make an inquiry. P.S. much of the confusion is the meaning of the term "soul" which means life force and the influence of the pagan notion of an immortal soul which allows a ghost like being escape the body at death. If this was so then there would be no need for resurrection. Remember when Jesus died he was non-existent in any form for three days and only reappeared by the grace of his father by the means of God being able to remember him exactly as he was and recreating him(resurrection) as he was when alive.

Mat 10:28 And you should not fear the ones killing the body, but not being able to kill the soul. But rather fear Him being able to destroy both soul and body in Hell.
Indicates they are two separate entities.
Mat 22:37 And Jesus said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind." Deut. 6:5
Indicates the soul and the mind are not the same.
Act 2:27 because You will not leave My soul in Hades, nor will You give Your Holy One to see corruption.
Indicates the soul lives on after death.
Act 12:23 And instantly an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give the glory to God. And having been eaten by worms, his soul went out.
Shows the soul leaving the body

It does not.
Genesis 2:7 "And the LORD God formed man the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
God's breath of life combined with the body of man creates a living soul. This soul is not immortal.
Ezekiel 18:4 "Behold all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die".

Most Bibles talk about the soul as being the literal body.
It is the spirit that is unseen and is the motivating force of the body and this is what goes back to God on our death. It came from him through our parents, and belongs to him.

2 Cor. 5:8..To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Your spirit can live without your body but your body can not live without your spirit. I am using soul and spirit interchangeably here for the purpose of discussion.

It is not the soul, but the spirit.
Man is a spirit, who possesses a soul and lives in a body.
If you read the story of the rich man and Lazarus, you will see each of them had spiritual bodies in Hades (Luke 16:19-31)
The rich man "died and was buried",
yet we see him in Hades with eyes; "he lifted up his eyes, being in torment..."
a voice: "he cried out and said..."
a tongue: "Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue..."
a memory: "Child remember, that during your life you received your good things..."
He even had compassion for his 5 brothers still on earth, asking that Lazarus be sent to warn them.
"If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body" I Corinthians 15:44
For those who suggest the story of Lazarus and the rich man is a parable, I would simply say that Jesus never dealt with fantasy or imaginary realities. Even if it was a parable, it would correspond exactly with the true nature of things.

The soul that sins dies.
Jesus has the power to throw our souls in Hell.
Repent and believe. Receive your access into Heaven through Jesus Christ.

I believe you could be right. Say a 'normal' person is involved in a car accident which leaves terr- I mean he or she completely braindead. Shouldn't her soul (her essence) somehow shone through? hmmm..makes me think that 'I' am 'my brain' and only to the extent that it is able to keep processing. hence the word braindead. and soul dead too, huh?
