Went for lunch with this girl I really like. I've known her for a while, but only recently came to suggest getting together for coffee. She said we should have lunch instead, so we did, and it went great; we really hit it off. But that's just lunch; what do I have to do to ask her out and make it clear I mean it as a date, without directly saying it?

For a first date ....do not ask her out on a Friday or Saturday. You're busy that day. It gives you the impression that you don't have a life. Unless she offers a Friday or Saturday, don't ask for it.

If you want to take passive agressive way of doing things, during your conversations....mention an event that you want to go to...movie, live band, concert, and invite her. Now this may back fire, and turn into a group thing, but you could always adapt and get some alone time.

But since you've already had lunch with her, just mention that you should have dinner now, and you know a great place (you do know a great place right?). Good Luck.

That sounds like a date to me. But if you want to be more formal about everything I suggest just asking her out. Make sure you make her understand that you want to take out in a "dating way" not friends for lunch way.

Ask if you can take her out some place nice ALONE. When you ask her this take her by her hand. Then tell her what time you will pick her up. Then pay for her. Even if its some place simple and cheap it doesnt matter. If she cant figure out on her own at this point that its a date then you have a problem and she is an idiot. good luck

here's something

I really had fun with you during lunch that other day...I was wondering maybe if we could spend a Friday afternoon/evening together..you know go to the movies and then I could maybe take you out to dinner

she should realize that you mean a DATE with all that stuff...it's just too obvious...and make sure you sound all casual and not all goofy, cuz that can ruin everything

Ask her to dinner or out to a movie. Lunch and coffee are for friends, suppers and fun are for dates.

ask her out for dinner or a movie or whatever interests you guys....in the evening! that is when most typical dates take place, and that would start the realization....you could even end the evening with a kiss--that should give her the idea you are interested in her without putting yourself way out there. good luck. :)
curious question....why don't you want to come right out and say it??? most girls would be totally flattered!!!

did you pay for lunch? did you ask to go out again? and continue getting a yes answer? then it's a date silly. if you like her keep asking her out if it looks like you and she r hitting it off ask if you can steady date her.
