There is no "letting down easy", unfortunately.
The sooner you are honest with him, the better. It is difficult; but better for the both of you, in the long run.
The sooner you set him free; the sooner he can begin the healing process.
Honesty always IS the best policy when it comes to relationships.
He will be mad and hurt at first; but will respect your honesty later.

It is beyond fixing at this point
I suspect in evolutionary terms (subconsciously of course) since you are being directed by the the usual chick chemistry - and you have in effect deemed this guy be a monogamous, noncontrolling, nondeceptive male - which in evolutionary terms is a very poor prospect - an evolutionary genetic survival weakling
However, you can do better in the future by understanding your innate primordial needs and simply by skipping the usual (in-between rebound type) relationship with the usual "nice guy" after you break up with your next lying, cheating, controlling jerk bad boy - and simply in the future move from old jerk to new jerk in your relationships

the difficulty will be determined on how long you have been together.
if it hasn't been long, do it now and save both of you the grief and aggravation of a long drawn out scenario.
if you've been together for a while, and you are just now realizing that he isn't the one for you...offer to meet him at a mall or a public place and sit down and talk, let him know how you feel...then you both can part ways separately. just be honest about the situation.

Sit down in private and talk to him. Be honest and don't try to squirm to make it sound better. He needs the total truth (nicely) in order to move on. Don't leave room for hope of it working though (unless there is) cause he'll just hold on for hoping.

First of all, tell him in person. Anything else shows that you don't really care about him. Phone is okay, handwritten letter is not so good, e-mail is bad, and text messages are the WORST way to break up.
Then, just tell him in the nicest way possible and tell him "It's not your problem, it's mine."

Well if you go to http://www.lovingyou.com/ and go under breaking up, they can help you out. If you don't feel anything speical, than I don't think it's real love. Ask him does he feel anything between y'all. If you begin saying like we should see other people and you can see he ain't going along, than maybe you can help him out. Try to tell him why and understand what y'all feel and if y'all truely wanna break up. You don't wanna hurt his feelings but, sometimes it does hurt. But they gotta be strong. I hope it goes well for y'all.
