nops, that wont help HER take the professional picture. Get the lighting in a place where you can see throught the camera and adjust it at the same time and change it from there. Or if you want a very light picture, put the lamp behind the camers, If you want a very Dark picture, put a cloth over the lamp, find any random thing and see what effect it has.

A good cheaty way, that a lot of photographers use, is to invest or dowload a picture editing program. I use GIMP. It is not as good as photoshop, but it is Free to download and It is quite easy to learn.

There are lighting effects on there, and you can get whatever effect you are looking for.

Hope that helped.

(If you would like to download GIMP Google it or visit Gimp.org)

Photos these days are usualy close up. Out of focus, abstract. A good effect is to have your camera at an angle. And yes, reading about photography is good. Another good thing to do is look at some pictures on the internet to get some inspiration and ideas.

Capturing an Image with the correct use of light comes from trial & error!
Consider your subject!, what your trying to convey!

Mood, Scene and composition!

Natural light is always a great help when shooting.
Personally I always try to avoid using Flash and Opt for A Fast Lense and High Speed film(For analogue Photography).

With New Digital technques offer the oppurtunity to change, enhance and modify the finished product.

(I avoid using any digital manipulation), and go for the Original.
If using Flash(On Camera or Off Camera) try to bounce or diffuse the intensity.
In a Studio envoironment this becomes a lot easier as you can play with the option and results.

Hope this Helps!

Soft light is better than strong/harsh light. Use a flash to fill shadows, just because the sun is out doesn't mean using the flash wont help. Using light from more than one angle helps too, again this reduces the heavy shadowing. Avoid putting a person so the sun is right in their face, it make them squint! Practice makes perfect. Especially if you are using digital-no wasted film, play around with different ideas to get a feel for it.
