I have applied in Los Angeles to become a big brother with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America. I would like to hear from current or former big brother volunteers. How has the experience been for you? Please share your opinions with me. Of course the BBBS website always has glorious things to say. But I would like to hear from volunteers on their own. The pros & cons, whatever.

I am on my second match with Big Brothers, and both matches have been a great experience. The best advice that I have would be to go in without any expectations.

Since you're in the application process, it may take a while to get matched up. First, you do have to go through a relatively lengthy screening process and interview. Sometimes it may take a while for you to get matched. It took almost a year in both cases for my matches.

Both of my matches were very introverted and shy. It takes a lot of time and patience to get through and build a relationship. But once I got to the point where the communication was two-way, it was a great feeling. I think it was important to have an open line of communication with the parent or guardian as well, as that helped out a lot. Sometimes, it's kind of hard to figure out what kind of activities to do, but the BBBS office always has ideas and suggestions. They do have a few get-togethers, and also had access to tickets for ballgames, etc.

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether you are making a difference, but just being there is all that matters. It's not one specific moment that is important, but rather the collective time spent together.

Good luck with your application.

I was a little brother at one time and coming from us it is awesome. You have a "friend " to spend time with. This is a blessing for a kid who only has a mom. Go for it it is helping kids out by keeping them out of trouble. Also thank you for taking the initiative.

Never been a volunteer. I applaud you for getting involved. I hope you will make a big effort. I applied for mentoring for my son. Both attorneys dropped the ball. It left my son even more disillusioned.

I had a little sister. She was a great kid. However I had a lot of problems with the mother expecting free babysitting at odd hours.
