I think it might have something to do with the way their teeth and jaws work. I know a couple of people who chew very noisily even with their mouths closed, and they both have bad teeth and jaw problems.

It might also be a perception thing. I know when I'm hungry, if people around me are eating, it seems like they're all chewing on rocks. I know they aren't all loud, but if I'm hungry, I'm on edge and seems loud.

Also, some foods just can't be eaten quietly. There is no quiet way for anyone to munch on corn nuts, for example.

My only thought on my subject is this: I have noticed that when my kids but too much in their mouth the chewing is much louder as compared to smaller bites. This doesn't seem to correlate to whether or not they are chewing with their mouth open. So I would recommend two things 1) take very dainty bites 2) try to start chewing after you've asked your table mate a question. Their conversation will mask the sound of your chewing perhaps.

I don't know why this is. I have heard some people who chew with their mouth closed that are actually louder than those with their mouth open. Best I can say is perhaps chew a little slower, that may make your chewing quieter.

Have you tried chewing slower? I would not be concerned, if you are a nice person, and your mouth is completely closed, who would judge you for a little chomping? You would not want to choke on something because you are trying to be quiet.

For at least some chewers, it's how they chew. My step-son is the absolute loudest chewer I have ever heard. Observing him chew, you can see that doesn't simply put a bite in his mouth and masticate. No, he actually 'winds up' his lower jaw for each chew, slamming it from some distance away from his upper jaw and impacting with great force, over and over and over again. It's fascinating to watch, and I am intrigued to learn where/how he ever learned to chew like this. BTW: He is a 19YO college student, so it's not as if he's a toddler in a high chair. LOL!

I guess it depends on what you're eating too. I mean, crackers are bound to make more noise than say, Jell-O.
