You poor thing. I'm so sorry. First things first, you cannot blame yourself. You did everything a cognizant responsible pet owner would do. You noticed a problem, you brought him immediately to the vet, and you demanded treatment. Your vet on the other hand stinks and I would never use him/her again. Find a new vet that doesn't send home a sick cat! There are simple blood tests they could have run to identify a kidney problem. They could have done a sonogram too. Male cats are especially prone to blockages and when treated early can be completely reversed. But blame doesn't make the hurt go away. You did not do the wrong thing by euthanizing your cat. You ended it's suffering peacefully. It's very unfortunate that your vet was not a feline specialist who might have recognized the problem instantly. Just know that you kitty has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and you will see him again someday. I lost my little girl last November and I cried for days. It gets better with time. Go to this site. It's very beautiful and it helped me very much. Rest in Peace little Simba. Rest in Peace my sweet JoJo.

It is very painful to lose a pet-especially one so suddenly and after such a short time together. Let yourself grieve, but do not blame yourself. Male cats can be prone to urinary tract infections-your cat probably had a genetic pre-disposition to them. You took your cat to the vet & did the best you could. You also made the brave decision to end your pet's suffering. That is never easy.
It is important to realize the signs (if you ever have another cat) of this illness. If a cat has trouble urinating, spends a great deal of time sitting in the litter box, urinates outside the litter box, licks or bites his genital area after urinating, and seems listless-you should take the cat to the vet immediately. UTI issues can be controlled with medicine & proper diet, but sometimes surgery is required. (Always have a copy of your vet records on hand in case you need to take your pet the ER.) If you ever have a doubt about the treatment a vet has given your pet; seek a second opinion. If you know your cat suffers from UTI issues, and you fear he's blocked; demand an ultrasound be performed. It is a definite way for the vet to see if he is or not. Unfortunately, vet care is much like our own health care & you have to be your own advocate to make sure your pet receives the best care at all times.
I'm very sorry for your loss and the pain you are going through, Take solace in the fact that your cat loved you & knew he was loved. Your time together was special and hopefully you can remember it soon without as much heartache.

Yes, you did the right thing. You noticed there was something wrong, you rushed him to the vet. I'm not sure if the VET did the right thing, but you did everything you possibly could to try to get him better. Allowing him to be euthanized was really a very, very kind thing you did. With a lot of time and money maybe--maybe--he would have been all right. Think of it this way--when you're hurt or sick, you understand that you will get better. Your guy was hurting badly, it sounds like your vet didn't know how to handle it, and you did what seemed like the kindest thing you could. It does hurt to lose a pet--but you will feel better in time. The hard part is wondering if you could have done more--but you did the very best you could and made the best decision you could, and nobody and no cat could have asked for more. He was very lucky to have an owner like you who cared so much.

I know it is upsetting to lose your pets I have had to have two of my cats put down because of health problems actully the last one was suffering from kidney failiure as well I was basically told he wouldn't live for too much longer even if they removed his bad teeth which is what I had orignally taken him to the vet for in the first place and they told me he probably wouldn't even survive the surgery to get the teeth taken out because of his age so I decided to let him go you are not a killer as you said the vet had tried to put the cathader back into your cat several times and he couldn't so you made the best decision that you could at the time for your pet, you cared enough to get him the veternary treatment he needed but we don't know how things are going to turn out so don't cut yourself up about it and as for the crying part just cry when you feel like it it is no different from losing a member of your family I was abit younger than you when I had to have my first cat put down and I had had him for about 12 years so you can imgine how sad I was all you can do is enjoy the time you have with them and look after them the best that you can which from what I have read it sounds like you did just that.

Oh, Honey, I'm so sorry. You did everything right, you noticed he was in distress so you took him to the vet. The vet said he was fine. You took him to vet again, just as you should have. You didn't kill your cat, you helped him all you could have. Unfortunately, the vet didn't diagnose his problem the first time you took him in, but that happens, too. You protected him, cared for him and loved him. The pain will eventually go away and the good memories of Simba will remain. Bless your heart. So sorry.

Well i have a story my self, i had a godlfish maybe not as important as a cat but i loved that gold fish. When i first got it it was a small rykin and it was amazing only when i would come it would come up to the glass and swim all the way up then swim back down and flip while goin down it was awsome i taught him to eat from my hand. So my friend was going out of town for about3 weeks i had a big fishtank so i told him to bring his fish i'll take care of it. So he did it was a koi, no prob i said i have koi in there to they'll get allong. After about 3 days coming back after school i came to see my little pride and joy, my friends koi had entirly eat out my littles fishes eye this happened before with my other bish due to dieses but my little fish the one i loved so dearly was there in front of me with no eyes and with my friends koi still harressing it ripping apart it's tail i tryed to save him but i could not, i was depressed for about 2 whole days i had no energy to do anything. i justed layed there thinking what i could of don and if i did i would of saved him but then i thought and this will relate to you, probaley want happen is luck you were stuck with a vet whole had no idea what he was doing it was a mifortunate event.Just like my friends fish the crazy fish a small chance but it happened what helped me thought was to meet up with a friend and do something if you like go hang out go bowling ride bikes or jog or something you'll forget about it and always think on the bright side like he is probaly in a better place probaly all these small chances are the best for them.No you are not a killer if someone was a killer it would be a vet but even though he still is not a killer it was a small chance of this happing and it happened i think you should try to forget it but always keep something to remind you of him. I know he is in a better place, i hope you feel better:)

No, you are not a killer. I actually just went through the same thing, and had to put my Cookie Monster down because her kidneys failed. She was only 8 years old, and I cried for two days. And just to let you know I am 32 years old.
And its kinda ironic, because her brother is still with me and his name is Simba. It will get better, and keep enjoying your other cats.

There wasn't anything else you could do. I know it hurts to lose a part of your animal family. Sorry that it happened. Spend time with your remainding animal family take pictures of them, play with them. They lost simba too. You will get on and stop crying, try writing it in a journal. It helped me when I lost my Great Dane Daphney she was only 1 as well. I think it hurts more when there younger. When my 15 yr old Bandit died I got over it easier because I reflected on his long happy life for comfort. Good Luck and I hope I helped. Peace..

OMG - I so feel for you. My 7 year old cat died last year and I can't remember ever being in that much pain. I cried for months, of course it gradually lessened. She was everything to me, where I went she went. She was the first pet that I ever had and she was all mine. She liked my husband and my son but she was MY cat.
It took a very long time for me to feel decent again, I gained about 20 lbs and went through a deep depression, but it does ultimatley get better. I now have 3 more cats that I adore, no one will ever take her place in my heart but I can still love others.
I bought myself a necklace with her birthstone in it and I where it alot to remind me of her.
