Believe it or not, the contagious period varies from person to person depending on the state of their health and their age. Most healthy people are contagious from a day before to 5 days after they get the flu...so the general consensus is that you are contagious for a week starting the day before you actually get sick. That is the guideline that the CDC, Center for Disease Control, uses (a week).

48 hours post-recovery at LEAST. They can shed virus for up to a WEEK after they stopped feeling sick.

If you work in day care, health care (with direct patient contact) or FOOD SERVICE, do NOT go back to work until at least 48 hours after your symptoms subsided.

"Stomach flu" is a misnomer. Viral gastroenteritis is not related to influenza at all. However, "viral gastroenteritis" can be a tough term for people to grasp, so if "stomach flu" is easier for you to use, then by all means, use it. Just know the disease is NOT related to the real flu. Viral gastroenteritis is usually caused by norovirus. That's the same virus that strikes cruise ships, dorms and restaurants.

There is no such thing as the "stomach flu."
