Your county's Recorder of Deeds has the history of the property from long before a house ever stood on it. But that's a tedious search. I agree with pulling your title search that should have been part of your closing packet. You paid for it so the least they can do is give it to you...

As the previous answer indicates, you need to visit the county court house. You will need to find the deed records and do a little leg work. The deeds should list the previous owners and you can proceed back in time to find the original owners of the house. This is how it works for SE PA, your area may do things a little or a lot differently. Hope this helps.

Hey TheMom,

You had to have a Title Search done by your Closing Lawyer, ask for that report. You paid for it. The record of ownership is public, and you can research at the Records Office yourself. Another way is to contact the people you bought it from and ask them if they have any information, how long they lived there and if they have any records from when they purchase the home.

You can go to the court house and check with the records clerk and he/she will have a record of the house probably from the time it was built and who all lived in it and when.
