he's testing what you feel for him with this open ended question.
Here's some examples of the scenarios he might except ::
1) let's say if you have no feelings for him, he might except no text message reply at all, or a short thanks if he's lucky or "thanks but please don't do that again" if he's not and the girl is direct.
2) If you treat him as a friend, he might except a short text message reply " Thanks for the card."
3) if you have somewhat a little feeling for him, he might except a longer text message reply "Thanks for the card, it was really sweet" or "really sweet of you to do that"
4) if you are in love with him, he might except a reply such as "Thanks Baby, I Love You!"
and so on... anyway, smart of him to do that :)

He wants a response from you. He wants to know what you are thinking and you feel about the card he sent. If you like him answer him sweetly, if he doesn't turn you on, don't respond.
