I've had retainers for almost 10 years and to keep them from smelling bad is to brush them everyday soak them in a listerine/water solution. this not only keeps them from smelling bad, it also prevents any hard white residue that can form onto your retainer.
also, make sure you brush your tongue, inner cheeks, and roof of your mouth well. those places tend to harbor lots of odor and bacteria.

Alot of time the odor can be caused by food build up which can decay and cause odor. Ask your dentist if it would be OK to put the retainer into the microwave for 2 minutes. This would kill any bacteria thus reducing the odor.
But first check and make sure it's ok with the Dentist. You don't want to ruin the retainer.
Good luck.

If you are sure it is the retainer, the answers above can help you. However, there are other medical causes for bad breath. Go Yahoo Health and search for "bad breath".
Read the possible causes and solutions there, and then talk to your doctor.

Maybe you should try an actual retainer cleaner. I have heard about this one attached on the link. I wish you the best of luck.

I wear mine at night so you'd think it would stink with morning breath but it doesn't. I just wash it off before and after i put them in (not using soap) try soaking it in mouth wash or GENTLY brushing it using toothpaste

first, you can point out your friend's flaws for being so incredibley rude to you. then, you can soak it in mouthwash. when it has been in the mouthwash for a while, throw in an
effervescent cleanser. do this for like about 2-3 times a week and the smell will go away.

To sanitize , mix 1 tablespoon Regular Clorox Bleach with one gallon of water. Always wash and rinse items first, then let the item soak in Clorox Bleach Sanitizing Solution for 2 minutes. Drain and air dry.
that will kill any bacteria
rinse it and wear it..
it also very good to wash your produce in too.
