I would really like to go away for a long weekend to see the northern lights. Anybody know when and where is best to go?

Best time to go is November/December.
Some airlines do night flights purely to see the Northern Lights - i.e. you take off from Gatwick at 9pm, a guide then explains everything and turns the lights off completely in order to show you the best views, then you land at 3am.
They fly you up north past Scotland and the views are amazing as there is no light pollution and you are higher up (obviously!).
Not quite a weekend away but the views you see in this short space of time are much more spectacular than a weekend away which would probably involve flights anyway.

You could go to Tromso in Norway, (Fly from London Heathrow to Oslo then connect to Tromso) It is a nice place to stay for a long week end. In the summer it is the land of the midnight sun.(the sun never sets and it does not get dark, but in the winter the opposite happens and it does not get light. That is when you will see the northern lights.

Shetlands. Try the Sumburgh Hotel at the South of the islands...and near the airport. The Queens Hotel in Lerwick.
The Spiggie Hotel.... near the South of the islands again. The best time to see them is from November to March. Try this site. www.visitshetland.com

NORTH! lol

Only joking. The best place is the arctic circle if you got to the top of Norway, you got a good chance of seeing them. My dad used to live in Sweden and him and his wife used to travel up to see them.

Good luck. I'm very envious. I believe their spectacular!
