If by "people" you mean westerner in general and Americans specifically, then you do understand that in general Americans have a poor grasp of their own political, and cultural origins. Most Americans cannot explain where the notion of a free education for both girls and boys came from to say nothing of the cultural contributions of the Germans, say, in the last 500 years. Ask an American if he or she can tell you the name of the first Nation to recognize the USA as an independent Nation. Betcha most don't know.

It is because they have no exposure to the positive contributions of Islam. Our media is extremely jaded and almost always represents Muslims as not progressive, or educated or wealthy (except Bush's family in Saudi Arabia). Ask yourself when someone says Iran what is the first thought that comes in your head. Could it be screaming men, women in traditional garb, or dirty, small children. However, Iran had an amazing culture and cities. Try google Iran cities and your will be stunned how similar they are to ours. And the lack of truth in American media says nothing about Islam, but points to the lack of truth on TV and other media outlets.

Maybe the Islamic scholars that brought this stuff didn't bring it in the last 500 years, but gues what...it's still used today.

Religion in general does not make positive contributions. At best they are social clubs, at worst they are reasons for war.

None of the virtues of humans require a religion.

Islam is no different to any other religion in these aspects.

But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. As old texts, religious documents can be useful sourcebook for moral issues we may have forgotten about and it can be useful to relearn them. I am assuming that the Quran has these morality lessons but I could be wrong.
