Here are some hair growing tips:

Eliminate or cut back on smoking, caffeine and carbonated sodas which weaken the body and block maximum hair growing potential.
Eat a healthy diet. Avoid foods that are high in sugar or fat.
Treat your hair like a piece of fine old lace. Treat it carefully avoiding any unnecessary brushing, combing or handling.
Avoid use of hot water, hot blow dryers or other hair care tools that may stress the hair.
Have a weekly scalp massage to provide stimulation to the hair follicles.
Do a series of ongoing hot oil treatments to protect the hair's shaft.
Have regular trims to eliminate split ends and allow the hair to look and feel healthier.
Get plenty of rest and sleep to allow your body to grow hair

I have been a cosmetologist for 20 years. As ridiculous as it sounds trimming your hair regularly will keep it healthy and It will eventually gain length. People who let their hair grow out and never cut it a defeating the purpose. As hair grows and becomes dry it gets split ends, those ends can eventually split the hair half way up the hair strand. Have you ever heard anyone say, "I have not cut my hair in a year and its not getting any longer" well it wont it's breaking off as fast as its growing. Instead of trimming it every month trim it every 2 months to keep it health and by all means do not go to a scissor happy cosmetologist. Everybody has their own perspective on what a little off the end mean. Hope this helps.

Eat adequate amounts of protein.
Protein is composed of the amino acids essential for the building of new cells, including hair. Five amino acids are of particular relevance to hair growth - cystine, cysteine, methionine, arginine and lysine.
Inadequate protein intake over a lengthy period can force hair into the resting phase with shedding a few months later. It is obvious then that sufficient portions of protein rich foods should form part of your daily diet. The best sources of dietary protein are lean meats, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, soy, nuts, grains and seeds. At least 15% of your daily calories should come from protein-rich foods.

Get your hair cut regularly, but only have a tiny bit off - this prevents split ends without shortening your hair too much.
