In the International Kick Boxing Association (I.K.B.A.) the rules did not allow ground fighting. You may end up on the canvas from a punch, kick, sweep, or throw, but there was no follow up allowed.
I have experienced the "thrill" ;) of being kicked in the head, the face, and back of the head with a spinning heel hook. I have also been punched very hard to the head. I can tell you that I would rather take a punch to the head over a kick to the head any day.
My worst experience was taking a rear leg front snap kick to the face, a kick that I ducked into. My shoulder blades were the first part of my body to touch the canvas after my feet left it. I did not lose consciousness though. My nose was broken (not severely), and I suffered a concussion. It was my first KO loss.
Someone once said, "When you take a good punch to the head, YOU feel it. When you take a good kick to the head, your MOTHER feels it." Obviously an exageration, but it does a good job of communicating the difference.

They say that like 90% or so of fights go to the ground. Every fight I have ever been in has ended on the ground. As for the kick thing i guess it just depends on the person. I guess you could have a perfectly formed kick, but still no power if all you work out is the upper body. I really just dont know though. I actualy just kinda answered this for some points. I apologize

Unless the other guy studies BJJ or some other sort of ground-fighting technology, it usually won't go to the ground unless you let it. Presuming you're a TKD guy, which is primarily a standing art (as with Aikido, my art), and it does go to the ground...you don't want to stay there long.
If we're talking a real street fight here and not just aggressive sparring or roughhousing, then do what you need to do to get off the ground (testicles & eyes included).
Again, I'm an Aikido guy, so I can't tell you about the roundhouse kick...other than avoiding one:)). However, from what I know of it, it should be sufficient...if executed properly and with enough force.

Took judo for about 10 years... miss it a lot.
The chance of a ground fight is pretty huge, especially on the street... And I wount argue, kicks are much more spectacular, but not that effective, unless u face a much weaker/unprepared opponent.
I myself had several fights not counting the sparings, and trainings...
Basically first i would go in a clinch, then it is not a problem to throw anyone on the ground depending on direction u're moving... and finally on theground is where u finish your opponent [if u did not knok him out with a punch/kick] either choke or break their hands/legs, basically totally disable them...
I would much rather fight a boxer or karate person rather then face same judo/sambo dudes, cuz ground is where most martial arts experts are most voulnarable. Basically most people don't know what to do on the ground, and that is where they are most voulnarable.
It is one thing beating the **** out of the drunken people on the street and fighting against a prepared person.

of the fights I have had (not counting sparring and wrestling).
none of them went to the ground. There was grabbing and grappling involved to a degree, no groundfighting.
of the "playfights" with friends when you are just ******* around, almost all of them.
If you kick someone in the face with the proper power, then you will of course hurt them more. HOWEVER, it is the question of landing the kick in the first place.
That can be a high risk move. A punch keeps you guarded and you don't risk bieng thrown or pushed off balance.
BTW- I'm NOT talking about in the clinch. thats another ball game.

I have not needed to fight. While many fights end up on the ground, all fights start out standing up.
Yes, kicks are more damaging if done correctly since your legs are stronger than your arms.

The problem with kick to head is, it's very difficult to pulls off and will put you in a dangerous position. However if you pull it off properly and land it right, it's almost guarantee (NOT always) the opponent will go down. I wouldn't rely on it in a real fight unless the opponent are short or slouch a lot and leave thier hands completely down far from their head.
I've took fight to ground because I perfer to break bone so the opponent remeber me for rest of their life and hopefully learn to respect others. If I knock them out then walk away then they'll get up and think "oh well at least nothing is broken. I guess I'll pick fight with someone else" But if I broken their bone, they will lose lot of confidient in themselve and the whole fighting thing will suddenly look ugly to them instead of cool or awesome.

I can tell you that a properly executed roundhouse kick to the head can knock someone out. Many fights go to the ground, staying on the ground is stupid though.

I have never been in an actual fight, but lots of fights end up on the ground, and lots dont. You will never know which will and which wont, so you must be prepared in order to be sustainable in both areas. Such as Judo, and Kick Boxing.

gotten into a fight lots of times, yes. umm...ended on ground twice...my first one yes...pathetic when 2 are on ground and rolling around...the other one was on ground only because i had to force the person down that had attacked my daughter and i needed this person to be off their feet and i needed to be on top of them as i "blacked" out so to speak and that is just how it went and my body and punches needed to land on them from on top.
as far as the "roundhouse" kick is concerned, i've never been impressed with the use of it to the head...stick with the use of it to the groin.
