Male cats tend to get along with each other better then females.

As long as they are all fixed though, it shouldn't make a huge difference

I would say a male. I introduced new female to my family and the one female i had she was so jealous it drove me crazy i kept the female because she goes out during the day. My female hisses at the other one all the time it has been about 6 months but as long as they do not physically fight i will keep the new female because she needed a home. All of mine are rescues.

As long as they are all spayed or neutered, the best way to make your decision is by temperament. Since you already have both sexes in the house, adopt a cat who is laid back and preferable already used to being around other cats, like one from a free roam shelter. I have seen all combinations work well.

Introduce slowly, allowing the new cat a safe area at first where they can all hear and smell each other (under a bedroom door for example). The increase their exposure. Good luck :)

Get a male, please! I have 3 males & 1 female. I tried to watch my sisters female cat at my house, and my female almost killed her!!! Female cats are very protective of their humans and their homes!!
