The arab world has more or less been ruled by religious fanatics since about 1200-1400 ad. Before that they were way more advanced than the west in areas like medicine and mathematics.
As church lost power to science in the west christians translated old arab knowledge and learned from that so in a way you can say that the west has gained from the days when arabs had most sense.

During the Middle Ages, Islamic societies preserved much of the ancient legacies in philosphy, medicine, math, astronomy ...etc. because they were more tolerant of intellectual expression than their neighbours.

When Europe was re-born in the 15-16th century, much of this legacy was readily available, and we did not have to "rediscover the wheel". This gave us an advantage that helped us conquer the world.

Now that Islamic societies are in the grips of religious despotism, it is up to us to carry the torch of reason. Though for sure, there is no shortage of people who would rather see it extinguished...

While Ibn Rushd (known to us westerners as Averroes) did not live in the time span you set (he died about 1198) it was his translations of Aristotle and Plato, and his commentaries on them, that would define the back drop to western philosophy until the reformation. His commentaries were the wellspring from which Aquinas would derive his philosophical power. While it is certainly true that Aquinas generally reject many of Averroes assertions, he was deeply indebted to his insights.
